Re-posting : don't forget to keep looking at the theory as well as the prayer board... what can seem so simple sometimes can help us understand so much.

Reposting - holiday club ideas based on the life of Peter for preschool and above.
well this page/blog was for sharing ideas but it's sat redundant as the weather has turned colder and really it's events that inspire me to create so i've decided i'll do dedicated pages rather than posts. that way i can add a page as a post rather than having long explanations here. I'll back date and tag these pages then.

thought i better also use this area to link to resources. the praykids! magazines are such an example. For some reason all 26 issues are avalible online to download as PDF's and are full of prayer ideas, both activities, testomonies and rewritten bible stories.

if you also have a program which allows you to edit pdf files then these files are a great resource for both images and text when making up your own material.
Matthew 14:22-33. (This story is also told in Mark 6:45-52 and John 6:16-21, however, the account of Peter walking on the water is not included in these references.)
if you make a cornflour goo mixture (cornflour and warm water) then you create a colloid which you can actually use as a liquid and a solid. (if you've not done this before read the sciency bit at the end of this post). if you fill a seed tray with the mixture, or if possible some buckets and then pour them into a long seed tray then you can walk on the 'water' (jumping is even easier) as long as you do so with conviction and speed, just like with Peter, walking knowing God's supporting you means you can do it, when you stop you sink! it's a very safe mixture too so even if the kids try to eat it they won't come to any harm. you may need a few packets of the stuff to fill a deep seed tray but it's not very expensive and if you really want to you can dry it out and reuse it.
SCIENCE BIT: The cornflour and water mixture is a mixture of solid particles suspended in a liquid, called a ‘colloid’ or a non-Newtonian fluid. When you stir the mixture slowly, the cornflour particles can move around in the water quite freely, and so it acts as a liquid. When you stir the mixture faster or hold it in your hand tightly, the solid particles rub against each other causing friction. This makes them stick together and act like a solid. if you want an example visually watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2XQ97XHjVw

there are lots of images here that could be used, the image of fish and the great catch, the call, and the new disciples turning from their old lives.
Fish and the great catch:
Fish are really easy to make, templates with scales made from circles of almost anything, icing or pepermintcreams work well. i've made a huge fish by filling an outline on netting with hand sized circles of fabric, you could even turn these into faces. fish buiscuits are also quite simple as it's an easy shape to cut or stamp. fishing games are good fun, a treasure hunt could be used or the old magnetic game with paperclipped card fish. the story could be told in a boat, stage setting where possible even if it's more imagination than anything elce is always good, you could have the kids being the crowd and/or the disciples to be with you in the boat.
The Call:
making fishing things from boats and oars to seaweed and fish means you can then let them go infrount of a cross, even better is you can trapse your kids into the worship area and let them put them on the altar infrount of a cross, a real giving up. simon says and follow the leader also tie into the story well. you can also talk about Peter's name change and talk about new names, a shy child could be given a sticker saying 'brave', or a huggy child 'caring' (obviously make them positive and encouraging)
Turning:
how about making two sided puppets, you could make them from cut out felt sewn, stapled or glued together or even make them from paper bags, each side of the bag can show the disciples reaction through the story ending eg sad they have no fish, puzzled jesus wants their boats and asks them to fish again, scared by his power, happy to be his disciples. older children can make spinning crafts that only show a picture when turning.
